7 Family Literacy Night Theme Ideas Everyone Will Love!
Looking to plan a fun, themed literacy night for your school community? Family literacy nights are such a wonderful way to build positive relationships between parents, students, and schools and to promote a love of all things literacy! And what better way to make the night successful than with a fun theme?
Let’s take a look at six themes I prepared earlier – complete with decoration ideas, books, blog posts and resources!
Camping
What’s more fun than campfires and s’mores? Plan a camping-themed family literacy night that captures the joy and adventure of camping!
Let’s Set It Up!
– Paper towel roll campfire: Provide paper towel rolls, red and orange tissue paper, and paper plates on each table for families to build their own campfire!
– Tent reading nooks: Set up tents around the space, add some cushions and a selection of books and you have the perfect camping-themed cozy corners for families to read together.
The Perfect Book…
A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen is the perfect camping-themed book to read aloud on the night.

Pirates
Sail, ho! Let’s set sail on a pirate adventure and have some literacy learning fun along the way! From treasure hunts to sailing the seas – there’s so much fun to be had for young and old!
Let’s Set It Up
An example or two of ways to decorate/make your space feel thematic for that theme
- Set the “sea-ne”: Play wave sounds or a Pirate movie soundtrack to really set the scene.
- Talk like a pirate: Tell everyone they have to talk like a pirate! You could also set up a station where the rule is to only speak pirate and have pirate vocabulary cards to keep the conversation flowing!
