Beach Themed Family Literacy Night
Creating a beach-y environment is easier than you think! Set up tables and put blue tablecloths on them, or wrap them in grass skirts. Shovels and pails, sunglasses and beach sounds played on a speaker can go a long way to giving your night a fun beach feeling!
I always try to get books donated or purchased for less than $1 each. We give books out to each child who attends, and they also earn a free dress pass!
Family Literacy Night Activity #1: Roll a Beachy Story
Create story dice with different beach elements or words on them. Have students roll the dice to figure out who the characters and problem of their stories are. Then they can write a story using the characters and problem they rolled on their dice!
Family Literacy Night Activity #2: Collecting Seashells
This activity is SO MUCH FUN. Using the stage or a corner spot is a great way to contain the activity. You can mark the edge with masking tape and make it feel like a beach! I set out cardstock shells that had words printed on them. The words are beach and ocean related and have one, two, or three four syllables.
Then each student gets a bucket with a label on it. The label tells students whether they’re looking for one, two, three, or four syllable words. Students walk around, searching for the seashells that match their syllable label.
Family Literacy Night Activity #3: A Day at the Beach
This activity is great for building listening comprehension! A teacher reads a story aloud and students listen. Then they use the beach graphic organizer to let students record the details from their five senses.
Family Literacy Night Activity #4: Shady Compound Words
Compound words are so easy to convert to puzzles. These sunglasses puzzles are perfect for kids to practice reading, segmenting, and combining compound words! Then kids can take the game to play at home. Great for the home-school connection!
Family Literacy Night Idea #5: Sunny Words
In this activity, students build words using word families and prefixes! This activity is easy to differentiate for different grade levels.
Family Literacy Night Activity # 6: Snack Shack
Following directions is so much more fun when you’re making tasty snack! This station works best as a ticketed station. Students receive one ticket when they arrive at the front door, so you don’t run out of supplies!
The directions are provided so families can make a little beachy scene with teddy grahams!
Family Literacy Night Idea #7: Sandcastle Word Building
Sandcastle is such a great word because it includes so many letters! You can have students write the word on a sentence strip and cut between the letters to build as many words as they can. This makes a fun contest, too!
