Always Be Coaching: How Your Coaching Mindset Shapes Every Conversation
What if every hallway chat, every quick question at the copier, and every “ugh, parent conferences stress me out” was actually a coaching opportunity?
That’s what I talked about with Casey Watts on Catching Up with Casey (Clear is the NEW Confident) in the episode Let Me Be Clear: Your coaching mindset affects every interaction you have.

The Three-Word Mindset Shift: Always Be Coaching
Believe it or not, I picked up one of my favorite coaching mindsets selling cutlery in college. (Yes, really!) The idea is simple: Always Be Coaching. It doesn’t mean being pushy. It means staying alert to the opportunities that are already right in front of you.
Turn Passing Comments Into Next Steps
Teachers tell us what they need all the time, just not always in a formal meeting. When a teacher mentions something they’re struggling with, our instinct might be to make a little joke or say “I know, same!” Instead, we can ask a gentle question:
- “What is it that you’re worried about?”
- “Want me to come by tomorrow and we can figure it out together?”
- “What would make this feel easier?”
That small shift turns a passing comment into a quick win, and a quick win opens the door for the next conversation.
What About the Fear of Hearing “No”?
We talked about this one a lot. It’s scary to offer support and get turned down! But a “no” is rarely a forever no. When we offer support with confidence (and respect teachers’ boundaries), we build trust over time. Keep showing up, keep being helpful, and keep the door open.
