Writing process folders to organize student writing

How do you keep your kids’ writing organized?

If they’re working through the writing process and taking a piece of writing from prewriting all the way through publishing, where do they keep it?

Do they dig through their desks, trying to find their work from yesterday, only to find it crunched up under their math book? Or do they just look at you and shrug, totally at a loss.It used to drive me bonkers.

That’s why I started organizing their writing in these Writing Process Folders!

Here’s how they work.

Each student needs two folders. I used a stapler to staple together the little tabs that hold the brads in the middle of the folders to staple one folder inside the other.

Then I labeled each pocket with a step in the writing process.

As we worked through a piece of writing, students moved their piece from one pocket to another. This reinforced the writing process and gave them the language to describe what they were doing in writing.

It’s an easy tool but it serves more purpose than organization!
