How to Leverage Low-Impact Coaching Strategies into Coaching Work, ep. 209

We’re starting a new series about coaching strategies!
For the last couple of years, I’ve done sessions for the Simply Coaching Summit about how we can use low-, moderate-, and high-impact strategies to strengthen our coaching relationships. I’ve heard a lot of great feedback from instructional coaches about it!
I’m excited to share this episode about how to leverage low-level coaching strategies into coaching work. In the next two episodes, I’ll share more information about moderate and high-level strategies.
The Coaching Strategy Toolbox
The Coaching Strategy Toolbox is a concept I’ve been working on for a few years. Right now, I’m writing a book about it. The basic idea is that you have a toolbox with lots of different tools and strategies in it.
The coaching cycle is one tool, and it’s a good one, but it’s not always the right tool for every situation. Maybe you’re in the early stages of building a relationship with someone. Or maybe you’re working with someone who is overwhelmed, and coaching for them is just one more thing on their plate.
While the coaching cycle is a great tool, there are lots of different ways to coach teachers. They might not be ready to jump into coaching fully. We need to see where they are and give them what they need at that moment. This is how we differentiate for our teachers.
Benefits of Low-Level Strategies
Low-level strategies are not BAD strategies! They serve a purpose and help us get where we want to go!
Below are some benefits of low-impact strategies:
- Feels less invasive to the teacher
- Demonstrates credibility by showing how you can help in small ways
- Gives teachers a quick win
- Shows empathy because you listened and helped them do something in the moment
- Helps to initiate a coaching relationship
- Can be leveraged into more impactful work in level 2 or 3 strategies
4 Low Impact Strategies
During the episode, I share four low-level strategies you can use during your coaching work.
- Check-in
- Tech Support
- Sounding Board
- Recommending Resources
I don’t recommend making low-impact strategies the main focus or a service you provide to teachers. Instead, go into these interactions with the understanding that you are using them as leverage. We use them to build relationships and turn them into opportunities for future coaching work.
Here are a few ways these low-level strategies help:
- Builds the relationship between you and the teacher by giving them a quick win
- Demonstrates empathy and credibility, which builds trust
- Shows that you’re willing to be helpful and you’re listening to their needs
- Demonstrates that you have the knowledge and resources to help
- Lets them know you’re going to show up and be visible
Examples of Leveraging Low-Impact Strategies
When we do a low-level strategy, there are a lot of ways it helps, but we don’t stop there. If we do, we’ll get stuck and won’t move forward in our coaching work. Instead, we need to find ways to turn these interactions into more impactful coaching work.
In the episode, I share a few examples of how you start these conversations and leverage these low-impact interactions into meaningful coaching work. There are a couple of examples below.
If you’re providing tech support, you can say:
- This is interesting! How are you using this in your lesson?
- Oh, I love this technology tool! How are you going to use it?
- I noticed your students are working on XYZ. How’s that going?
If you’re sharing a resource, you can:
- Offer to visit the classroom to see the lesson in action.
- Ask if they would like to see a colleague teach using this resource.
- Offer to read a recommended book to their students.
How to Leverage Low-Level Coaching Strategies into Coaching Work
Always be coaching! You can start engaging with teachers, even when you’re there to provide tech support or share a resource. Keep leveraging at the forefront of your mind and see every interaction as a chance for deeper coaching work.
In this episode, I share four low-level strategies, the benefits of using them with teachers, and how to leverage them into meaningful coaching work. Listen to the entire episode using the player below or wherever you get your podcasts.
