3 Fun Getting to Know You Activities for Back to School
As back to school season rolls around again, its time to plan some fun ways to get to know your new students and start the new school year in the best way possible. So to kick you off, here are three fun get to know you activities that are bound to engage your students and have them asking to play again and again!

1. Classroom Bingo
This unique take on bingo is the perfect community-building activity. Students get to share what they like in an engaging and non-threatening way that suits students of all personalities. This game is also a great way for kids to find similarities with their classmates and encourage them to make new friends!
Here’s how to play Classroom Bingo:
- Students fill in the answers on their bingo board, answering each question about themselves. Questions include:
– What is your favorite cartoon character?
– How many pets do you have?
– What’s your favorite breakfast? - Students copy their answers onto their bingo pieces sheet and cut them apart.
- Put all the bingo pieces from every student into a bowl or hat and mix them up.
- To play, draw the bingo pieces one by one and when a student gets a match on their board, they raise their hand so everyone can learn a little bit about them. It’s a great way to learn fun details about students and see who has something in common!
2. Would You Rather Questions
Get to know your kids by learning about their likes and dislikes with a fun Would Your Rather activity! Students can either move to the side of the classroom or use hand gestures to answer the questions. Either way, this game is a great way for students to connect with friends who make the same choices as them and see that we’re all similar in some ways!
The Would You Rather questions include:
- learn a new language? learn how to sew?
- sit on the floor? sit on a beanbag?
- have a class pet? have a class plant?
- clean your own classroom? cook your own lunch?
- loop with your class? have a new class every year?
- bring your own lunch? eat school lunch?
- meet a dinosaur? go in a hot air balloon?
- ride a horse? ride a camel?
- wear a raincoat every day? wear a hat, scarf, and mittens every day?
- go to the movies? go watch a play?
- hop on one foot for five minutes? stand on your head for two minutes?
- watch a movie? play a board game?
- wear a costume to school? wear pajamas to school?
3. Two Truths and a Lie
This simple yet super fun activity is unique every time you play so your kids will be asking to play again and again! Students get to share about themselves but also show some creativity and personality when they craft one lie!
To play this get to know you activity:
- Each student writes down three things: two facts about themselves, and one lie.
- The aim is to not only learn about each other, but to trick your classmates (and teacher) and make it difficult to pick which is the lie!
- Chat to your kids about the strategy needed to do well in this activity including choosing creative facts and making up lies that are not too unbelievable!
So give these back to school get to know you activities and try and I hope you have a wonderful start to the new school year!
