This resource includes two different scavenger hunt grids—A and B—so you can easily differentiate or reuse the activity with a new text. The grids include poetic elements like metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, sensory appeal, repetition, comparisons, and more. It turns reading poetry into a treasure hunt, and suddenly your students are excited to reread the poem five times. Win!
Start by modeling with a mentor poem—see my book recommendations later in this post-read it aloud together, then build an anchor chart to label the figurative language and characteristics of poetry as a group.
