Mentor sentence instruction blends explicit instruction of grammar skills with hands-on sentence building and constructing. This week-long unit focuses on spelling words with silent letters including wr and kn. Students analyze a sentence, learn new grammar skills, and revise and create new sentences including a compound predicate.

Five days of lessons are included:

• Day One: Sentence strips to cut and glue into a notebook
• Day Two: Silent letters hunt tables to cut and glue into a notebook
• Day Three: Word/phrase cards to cut out and manipulate, and a handout to practice the skill (with answer key included)
• Day Four: Dictation – what do we check for?
• Day Five: Sample sentences to use as models, and a four- question quiz on the skill, in multiple choice format.
