Mentor sentence instruction blends explicit instruction of grammar skills with hands-on sentence building and constructing. This week-long unit focuses on using capitalizing proper nouns including people, places, days of the week, months of the year, etc. Students analyze a sentence, learn new TEKS-based grammar skills, and revise and create sentences following specific structures.

One week of grammar instruction in one sentence: teaching about capitalization of proper nouns

Five days of lessons are included:

Day One: Sentence strips to cut and glue into a notebook

Day Two: Proper noun hunt tables to cut and glue into a notebook

Day Three: Word/phrase cards to cut out and manipulate, and a handout to practice the skill (with answer key included)

Day Four: Dictation – what do we check for?

Day Five: Sample sentences to use as models, and a four- question quiz on the skill, in Texas Writing test format.
