Goal Setting for Your 30/60/90 Day Action Plan for Instructional Coaching, ep. 203

Do you find it hard to set and reach your coaching goals?
If you answered yes, this episode is for you!
We’re continuing our series about creating a 90-day coaching action plan. Today we’re discussing goal setting for your 30/60/90 day action plan for instructional coaching.
In episode 202, we talked about how to collect data for your instructional coaching action plan. Now we’re going to take the data we collected and set meaningful goals for coaching support.
During the podcast, we explore how to set effective goals for different tiers – whole school, team, and individual teachers. We talk about how to structure these goals whether they’re nested or different for each tier. Plus, you’ll hear how to break down your goals into manageable steps with checkpoints so you can be successful.
Tiering Instructional Coaching Support
Looking at tiers for students is a little different than tiering coaching support. Usually, tiering support in a school setting looks like this. Tier one is what everybody gets, tier two is differentiated, and tier three focuses on the students who need the most support.
That’s not the way we’re using tiers when setting coaching goals. We’re using the tiers as the way we meet teachers’ needs at three different levels. We meet our whole school level needs at tier one. Tier two is where we differentiate for each of our teams. Then tier three is where we work with individual teachers.
How to Set Goals for Your 30/60/90 Day Instructional Coaching Action Plan
When we’re setting goals for our instructional coaching action plan, we’re looking for big ideas to focus on. The focus for these goals comes from your data. In Episode 202, I walked you through how to use four different components of data to create a big picture of what is going on at your school.
Based on that information there are a few different areas that you may be looking at to improve teaching and student outcomes. You might look for academic vocabulary, management, lesson design, curriculum, or any other themes you uncovered while looking at your four data sources.
Once you find these focus areas, you’re going to look at them and figure out how to apply them to goals at each tier. It can be a nested model where all three levels focus on one thing across the whole school. For example, if you’re implementing a new school-wide curriculum.
Instead of the nested model, we may have different goals for each tier. You can take each tier in a different direction depending on the information you’ve gathered during the previous step.
Which you choose really depends on where your school is at and where you want to go! Once you figure out which path you’re taking, you write out your goals and set checkpoints for each one. To do that you want to break down your goals into action steps for 30, 60, and 90 days. In this episode I share a detailed example of how to break down a sample goal around academic language over 90 days for a coaching action plan.
