How Read Across Your School Family Literacy Night Works
Personalize your materials with your school name, so your Read Across America celebration will resonate with families. For example, if your school name is Matthews, hey will read, “Read Across Matthews ES!” When families arrive, they receive a punch card and a reading pledge card. Then they make their way through literacy stations at their own pace, choosing activities that spark their interest.

Read Across Your School Reading & Writing Activities
Here are ideas for celebrating reading with literacy activities that are included in the resource:
🐷 Storybook Puppet Studio
Students listen to a story and make a puppet to represent a character! You can choose whether you want this to be an open creation station and provide art materials, or give students templates.
In the resource, I include templates for a pig, elephant, chicken, duck, and cow. These would be great for Mo Willems Elephant & Piggie books or for Click, Clack, Moo books!
🔖 Save Your Spot!
I love a good bookmark! In this activity, students will craft their own bookmark to use when they read!
You might put up some sample bookmarks so kids can see what they can add to theirs! Bookmarks often have a saying about reading, sometimes a pun, and they have artwork that fills the bookmark!
💌 Post Office
In this activity, students listen to a story read aloud. Then they write and draw a postcard to a character from the story!
I love these activities that help kids think reflectively about characters. They can tell them something they’re interested in, describe their favorite part of the book, or ask a question!
🥨🍫 Sweet & Salty Story Snack
Give each student a plastic baggie and have them make a tasty snack! These snacks include pretzels, chocolate chips, marshmallows, and honeycomb shaped cereal. I love to pair with a book about bees, like The Bee Tree by Patricia Polacco, or Give Bees a Chance for a fun nonfiction read!
📚 Battle of the Books
In this activity, you’ll choose two books your families will love! Then you’ll collect multiple copies and have them read these books together. They’ll vote on the best one and add it to a bar graph!
👑 Retelling Crowns
This station is a fun and simple activity for retelling favorite books! Read aloud a book. Give each child the retelling crown template with beginning, middle, and end. Have them illustrate the book and each part of the story! Then they can use a sentence strip to make a crown and wear it during the event!
🌀 Spin a Story Response
This fun paper spinner is a great way to give parents some questions they can use when they talk to kids about their reading! Kids color the spinner and assemble it with a brad. Then they can use it to respond to any fiction they read!
💎 Word Treasure Chest
Make a paper treasure chest and use it to collect special or interesting words! Drawing families’ attention to words is a great way to help them notice what vocabulary they regularly use and their children use. Picture books have more academic vocabulary than is used in general conversations. Pair this station with The Word Collector or another great book about vocabulary!
🐝 Fun Facts
Nonfiction doesn’t get the attention it deserves when we celebrate reading! Choose a nonfiction book about bees or plants – I love Diary of a Bee by Stepanka Stepaninova or Plants Can’t Sit Still by Rebecca E. Hirsch. Kids listen to the book and gather facts about the topic. Then they make the craft! It’s a fun way to expose families to the joy and value of nonfiction!
🖍️ Illustrator’s Studio
Visualizing is such an important comprehension strategy that families can practice at home! Read aloud a book with great detail and imagery. Have students choose their favorite scene and illustrate it! Kitchen Dance by Maurie J. Manning and Roller Coaster by Marla Frazee.
🔎 Genre Detectives
Helping families understand and explore genre is a great way to bridge school and home. Provide families with a small stack of books and baskets for sorting. Give them the genre detectives magnifying lens and have them look for clues about on each book to sort it!
There are 11 stations total, each with materials, directions, and optional read-aloud connections. Kids don’t even realize how much reading, writing, and word work they’re doing because they’re too busy having fun!
Tips & Ideas for Hosting a Family Literacy Night at School
- Keep it flexible: Let families choose stations at their own pace.
- Plan ahead: Use the included prep checklists and ticket system for stations with limited supplies (like the Sweet & Salty Snack Station).
- Get help: Assign staff or volunteers to each station so you can float and troubleshoot.
