Understanding AI
Avoiding AI or just don’t get how it works? No worries! Principal Mo breaks down what AI is and how we can use it.
She explains that AI works as a language model that compiles information from different sources to answer prompts provided by the user. Instead of searching Google and piecing together information yourself, AI can instantly analyze it and deliver a concise answer in seconds.
Principal Mo compares the AI process to using a faster, smarter kitchen appliance – think using an air fryer, rather than a stove or open fire.
AI Tools for Coaches
During the episode, Principal Mo shares her favorite AI tools and gives a brief overview of each one. Here are her top picks for school leaders:
Chat GPT – The one most people know, and a good starting point. Best for general purposes, like brainstorming and generating ideas. User-friendly and intuitive.
Google Gemini – Google’s language model. It’s free and helpful for quick answers, but sometimes less in-depth.
DeepSeek – Extremely detailed outputs for when you want to go deep. Excels at detailed analysis and provides insight into the answer process.
Notion – Productivity tool for project management. Useful for teams. Great for assigning tasks, tracking projects, collaborating, and planning.
Claude – Excellent for refining writing and elaborating on ideas. Ideal for producing thoughtful, in-depth writing outputs.
DALL-E – Generates still images from prompts. You need to be as descriptive as possible and have loose expectations for images.
Sora – Produces realistic videos. Great for b-roll or demo visuals.
Brisk – Free Chrome extension that can be used for many different tasks. Principal Mo gives the example of turning lesson plans into slides to save time.
Notebook.lm – Turns written text into an audio podcast. You can also upload a document and search inside it.
Magic School AI – Simplifies teaching tasks. Makes prep and planning faster.
Using AI Tools in Education
Principal Mo and I discuss practical ways educators can use AI. She shares an example of working with teachers to unpack standards and explains how instructional coaches can use it for planning professional development (PD).
She says that the key is effective “prompt engineering”. This means being specific about who you are, what you need, your audience, and desired output format (charts, slides, etc.).
Planning Professional Development with the Help of AI
Principal Mo provides a powerful example of how instructional coaches can leverage artificial intelligence to address a common pain point – streamlining PD planning.
Here’s her workflow for using AI to create professional development:
- Upload clean data (no personal, identifiable info) to quickly analyze trends, strengths, and areas for growth.
- Have AI build a professional development outline based on the identified needs.
- Request AI provide differentiated PD suggestions for new and veteran teachers, as well as for different learning styles.
- Ask AI to find and summarize scholarly articles and research-based practices to support your PD plan.
According to Principal Mo, this entire process will take less than 10 minutes. This approach saves lots of time and allows coaches to focus more on supporting teachers and students.
If you want to hear all the details about how she used AI with her team to unpack the standards, be sure to listen to the entire episode.
