Week 3: Why Instructional Coaches Should Invest in Content and Curricular Knowledge – 3 Tasks, ep. 198

Instructional coaches need to know what’s going on when we walk into a classroom! We have to understand what learning looks like in our grades, subject areas, and at our school. Without a frame of reference, it’s not really clear whether things are moving in the right direction, at the right pace, and developing the skills students actually need in that grade.
This week we’re continuing our series about the first 20 days of instructional coaching. In this episode, we dig into why instructional coaches should invest in content and curricular knowledge. We look at three things that can help coaches get a handle on content, curriculum, and expectations during that first month of coaching.
Week 3: Why Instructional Coaches Should Invest in Content and Curricular Knowledge
During the third week of coaching the focus is on learning – teacher learning, coach learning, kid learning. Everyone needs to figure out what kind of learning needs to happen on campus. Now, I know this is a super busy time of the year, and you might get pulled to do other things, but you still need to have a strong understanding of what learning looks like at your school.
3 Tasks
This episode explores three tasks from the Instructional Coaching Start-Up course that will help you set yourself up for a successful school year. Dig into these three things to get a handle on what learning should look like in the grades and subject areas you coach.
1. Unpack Standards
I know most people groan when anyone mentions standards! I get it but we can’t effectively coach without understanding what teachers are expected to teach! Take some time to unpack the standards and get a better understanding of any areas you’re unfamiliar with. In the episode, I walk you through the elements you’ll want to consider as you examine the standards. I share the complete process, video guide, and examples of unpacking standards in my course, Instructional Coaching Start-Up.
2. Learn About Assessments
Do I love tests? Nope! Do the people in charge listen to my opinion? Apparently not! But if we’re going to hold students accountable, even if it’s not our choice, we have to prepare them because it’s the right thing to do! As coaches, we need to look through the assessments and connect what we observe to the standards we unpacked.
3. Dig Into Curriculum Alignment with Resources
The last task is to look at curriculum alignment to see if you’ve got any gaps, and what resources teachers use on campus. In the episode, I share questions you can ask yourself and your teachers. Plus I talk about how you can use feedback surveys to get to know what teachers really think.
Listen to this episode now to hear all the details! You’ll learn why instructional coaches should invest in content and curricular knowledge, and three tasks that will help you get a handle on what learning looks like at your school.
