5 Options for Classroom Work in a Coaching Cycle, Ep. 167 Instructional Coaching with Ms. B

We’re in the middle of our series about coaching cycles and making them work for you! Sometimes instructional coaches get hung up on the idea that coaching cycles have to be done in a certain way, but the reality is we can make them work for the teachers we serve!
I’m all about differentiating coaching and supporting teachers with strategies that are meaningful to them in the moment. That’s why I’m excited to share 5 Options for Classroom Work in a Coaching Cycle in this episode.
All of these models are highly impactful, and we see changes happen in classrooms after we do any one of these things! But it doesn’t mean that they are equally impactful for each teacher.
We, as coaches, have to differentiate based on teacher’s individual needs! The ideas in this episode will help you think creatively about how to solve some of the problems that you’re having with certain teachers and give you new strategies to try with your team.
5 Options for Classroom Work in a Coaching Cycle
In this episode, I give you a brief overview of the 3 parts of the coaching cycle, pre-conference, classroom work, and debrief. I also share ideas for differentiating support for teachers during the coaching cycle. You’ll learn about 5 different options for classroom work support and what they look like during a coaching cycle. Here’s a brief overview of each one.
Option 1 Modeling
With Modeling, you go into the classroom to teach a lesson and show one way that lesson could be done. You think aloud to help the teacher see why you’re making the decisions that you’re making and how you know to do what it is that you’re doing. I recommend that you plan together really well during your pre-conference for a model lesson.
Choice 2 Observing
When I was a coach on campus, I could not use the word observation or observe because that was tied to formal evaluations. Since I couldn’t use that word, I’d say, I’m going to come watch you teach and give you some feedback. I would visit the classroom and use a note taker or observation guide. During the observation, I’d focus on the things that were specifically planned for that lesson.
Choice 3 Classroom Visit
A lot of time teachers get stuck in their own teaching bubble! As coaches, we want to expose them to other teaching models and perspectives. One of the options you can provide is a classroom visit where that teacher observes a colleague teaching a lesson. Some people call them learning walks or colleague visits. During the visit, the coach and the visiting teacher observe the lesson and take notes. Once the lesson is over the coach debriefs with them. You can also set up a time when the teachers can talk together and the visiting teacher can ask questions of the host teacher.
Choice 4 Co-Teaching
My biggest tip for co-teaching is to make sure that when you plan together, you plan everything. It shouldn’t be I’m doing this and you’re sitting around. You’re doing this while I’m sitting around. That’s not really co-teaching. That’s taking turns! With co-teaching, we want to see two teachers in action adding their expertise to the lesson. I dig deep into co-teaching in Episode 6. Be sure to check it out if you want to learn more about teaching with a partner.
Choice 5 Video Coaching
Video coaching is a super impactful tool that often gets forgotten about! In Episode 79, I talk with Corey Camp of Sibme about video coaching and how to use it effectively. In this model, the teacher records their teaching and you both watch the video while taking notes. Then you come together and discuss it. You can debrief and talk about how the teacher is going to use what they got out of that lesson to impact their own teaching.
